What is deeper learning? How should curriculum be framed to promote deeper learning? What kinds of instruction are needed to help students learn deeply? How should deeper learning be assessed? Join Jay McTighe and Harvey Silver as they addresses these important questions by exploring ideas from the award-winning book, Teaching for Deeper Learning: Tools to Engage Students in Meaning Making (ASCD, 2020). They will discuss three principles underlying effective instructional design and delivery and present many examples of practical and proven tools and strategies to help educators actively engage students in making meaning.
Teachers of students in grades 2-12 for all subject areas and for college faculty. It is also well-suited to school-based administrators and instructional coaches who visit classrooms and support teachers.
Jay McTighe is an accomplished author, having co-authored 18 books, including the award-winning and best-selling Understanding by Design series with Grant Wiggins. His books have been translated into fourteen languages. Jay has also written more than 50 articles and book chapters, and been published in leading journals, including Educational Leadership (ASCD) and Education Week. Jay has an extensive background in professional development and is a regular speaker at national, state, and district conferences and workshops. He has made presentations in 47 states within the United States, in 7 Canadian provinces, and internationally in 40 countries on six continents.
Harvey F. Silver, EdD is the co-founder and president of Silver Strong & Associates and Thoughtful Education Press. With the late Richard W. Strong, Harvey developed The Thoughtful Classroom, a nationally renowned professional development initiative aimed at helping each and every student succeed. In collaboration with Matthew J. Perini they develop the Thoughtful Classroom Teacher Effectiveness Framework, a comprehensive system for observing, evaluating, and refining classroom practice that is being implemented in school districts across the country. Harvey is the author of ASCD’s The Core Six and The Strategic Teacher. He is also the lead developer of the award-winning Tools for Today’s Educators series of books. Harvey’s newest publication is Teaching for Deeper Learning, a collaboration with fellow thought leader, Jay McTighe.
