Responding to High-Stakes Assessments and New Curricula in Science and Social Studies: ARE YOU READY? (July 24th & 25th)

July 24 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm EDT

A NEW 2-DAY PROFESSIONAL LEARNING ACADEMY

JULY 24th & 25th

EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY | Richmond, KY

9:00am – 3:30 pm (EST)

This academy is for K-12 educators: teachers, teacher-leaders, instructional coaches, and administrators

High-stakes assessments in science and social studies—along with more rigorous curricula—have placed new demands on teachers and students. To respond to these challenges, our students need to be able to read analytically, gather evidence from multiple informational texts, deeply understand and transfer core concepts, and develop powerful written arguments.

Join Dr. Harvey Silver and Dr. Kimberly Zeidler-Watters for this professional learning academy designed to help students succeed in standards-aligned curricula and on high-stakes assessments. In this academy, Harvey and Kimberly will focus on “Three Cs” that content-area teachers and school teams need to pay attention to as they gear up for this work:

$

THE FIRST C: Challenges

What do these assessments and curricula demand of our students, and why do they pose real challenges to many content-area teachers?

You’ll examine sample tasks and curricular sequences to zero in on the most common skills that they require.

$

THE SECOND C: Competence

How do we develop the skills and habits that students need to be successful?

You’ll learn high-impact strategies that teachers in all content areas can use to build the reading, thinking, and evidence-gathering skills that the assessments and curricula demand.

$

THE THIRD C: Commitment

How can we grow students’
commitment to persevere and build deep understanding?

You’ll walk away with tips and tools for increasing student engagement and developing the kind of growth mindset students need to learn deeply.

Session One: September 19, 4:00pm – 5:30pm

Integrating Literacy Across the Curriculum. Content-area teachers are being asked to make the commitment to literacy across the curriculum.  Why? Because literacy is critical to deep learning in all content areas, and because literacy-rich classrooms see better outcomes. In this session, you’ll learn a simple framework for ensuring that your classroom engages students in the reading, writing, and discussion skills needed for deep learning and academic success. You’ll also walk away with a set of practical tools for developing students’ reading comprehension and literacy skills.

Session Two: October 17, 4:00pm – 5:30pm

Session Two: Instructional Design. A “toolbox” full of good teaching strategies is important, but designing lessons and units that make the best use of those tools and strategies is another thing. This session will focus on a universal instructional-design model for crafting standards-driven lessons and units that promote deep learning.

—–

Session One: November 14, 4:00pm – 5:30pm

Session Three: Real-World Assessment. How do we design assessments that develop the thinking practices embedded in the standards and tests—while, at the same time, inspiring students to think beyond the classroom? In this session, you will learn how to build tasks and assignments that focus on real-world applications and that hone the skills students need to solve complex problems.

$400 per person
